A Passivhaus
is a home that maintains a comfortable indoor temperature without the use of
active heating or cooling systems. The concept was originally presented by Dr
Wolfgang Feist of the PassivHaus Institute in Germany. A Passivhaus
is usually a Low-Energy Home or a Zero Energy Home, but not all
Zero-E or Low-E homes are Passive Homes. In Europe,
Passivhaus homes are built to a very exact Passivhaus Standard. Timeless
Homes can build your home incorporating the technologies typically used in Europe
to build to the Passivhaus Standard. Most Passivhaus homes use a more compact
building footprint to optimise the relationship between floor area and
external wall area. As with all other energy efficient designs, orientation
and other factors need to be considered carefully. All Pasivhaus homes ‘work’
by designing to the simple Pasivhaus principles: These involve creating a
building envelope that is much ‘tighter’ than the norm and by creation of a
more effective thermal envelope. In order to comply with Pasivhaus
principles, homes are built to better than 0.6 air infiltration when tested
to the N50 test and the building’s design needs to enable less than
15kW/m˛/annum heating and/or cooling energy usage.
