11W/M2 homes are homes that require only 11 Watts per square metre heating or cooling to stay comfortable year round. Imagine, if you will, owning a home that cost a fraction of the norm to heat or cool. Typically, New Zealand new homes require 90-120 Watts per square metre to heat or cool. Even, exceedingly well built so-called sustainable and green homes may require 50 Watts per square metre. So, a typical 200 square metre home may need 12-20kW (kilowatts) of heat input. When designing for 11 Watts rather than 50-120 Watts, that brings the total heat input, in a 200 square metre home, down to 2,200 Watts, or 2.2kW. So, rather than installing one centrally ducted 12-20kW heat-pump, or two/three 7kW heat-pumps, it’s perfectly possible to heat or cool the same size home using only one 3kW unit! That means that you will not only experience significant savings in installation costs, but also incredible running cost savings. For a 200 square metre home, 2.2kW is only two convection heaters. You need not actually install a heat-pump at all! How is this possible? We need to incorporate certain technologies to make this work, but – it’s not trickery. All this technology is already used extensively overseas and all the materials we need are already available right here in New Zealand. The main thing is that we aim to make houses technologically simple, while taking a systematic approach. This means, we incorporate the technology we need, but avoid, where possible, mechanically complex systems. You therefore get all the benefits of a modern, well insulated and comfortable home, but without high running costs. We’ve had this technology installed in our Offices and Display Rooms. Because we did not know, prior to installation, how little heating we’ll need, we also installed two inverter heat-pumps. We know now that we do not actually need the heat-pumps! On most winter days, we heat the entire building with a heater capable of 1.5kW heating energy, at a reduced (roughly) 0.8kW setting. On very, very cold days, we may turn on one of the heat-pumps for an hour. We estimate our maximum heat-input requirement to be 15 Watts per square metre.
