Designers and Builders, for Timeless Architecture, Timely Construction

Mark Jerling

Mark Jerling, Architectural Designer and Technologist. Mark, Annie and Annabelle Jerling immigrated to New Zealand in 2001 and John was born here, in 2002. Mark started off his Architectural career in 1986. Mark worked first for Ley Kempthorne and later for Rowan Pape, Architects in Cape Town carrying out mainly traditional vernacular architectural design and detailing work for Rowan Pape Architects and Leslie Louw, Architect. It is during this time that Mark developed a passion for traditional architectural styles, such as the Victorian and Edwardian styles.

In 1996 Mark started his own Architectural Design firm, and continued with the design of, mainly traditional villas and homesteads of varying styles and budgets. Mark also continued to consult to other architectural firms producing new home designs for several developments, most notably for SKA and Meridian. All up, Mark’s portfolio in South Africa amounts to around 30 new traditional homes, several renovation projects and a small number of commercial projects.

Upon arrival in New Zealand, Mark gained New Zealand construction technology experience at Stephenson & Turner Architects in Wellington. Since 2002, Mark has designed two show-homes and over 50 villas and homesteads. To date, Mark has designed 12 award winning homes and his designs have featured in several publications, both in New Zealand and abroad.

When Mark is not working on the design of a client’s new home or alterations and additions to an existing home, he’s often found exploring some nonexistent track with his very scratchy and well used 4x4. When not getting muddy, he enjoys spending time with his family, reading mainly non-fiction or tidying up pre-war valve radios, vintage cars, old furniture and other collectables.

Combined Experience: We can architecturally design your homes in any style. We have considerable experience with traditional building styles, most notably Colonial, Victorian, Georgian & Edwardian styles. Much of our past work developed toward a more modern interpretation of these styles, with traditional shapes married with contemporary layout requirements.

We can assist you with all aspects of your new home, from site selection and site layout to décor and landscaping. Indoor-outdoor flow, family lifestyle, you name it. We have designed multi-unit apartment blocks, and several townhouse developments. This work has included all aspects from initial township layout through selection of materials and interior décor.  We have compiled architectural guidelines for developments and have helped draft covenants to protect clients developments.

We have gained experience with restoration techniques and research.

Some of our staff have worked on the restoration and / or renovation of residential buildings from the 17th to 19th centuries and early 20th century homes. Some staff have experience with Hospitality Design requirements through their experience on the design teams for several 5-star and 5-star + establishments. Whether your project is a 45 room boutique hotel, or a 2 suite home-stay – we can assist you with all aspects from concept to completion.

Some staff have been on the design team for several wine production cellars with all aspects of winemaking from destalking through barrel and bottle maturation and even effluent control and disposal taken into account.

We have considerable experience with lighting layouts, with technical knowledge of lighting types and advantages of different types. We have carried out purpose made light fitting design in low voltage dicroic, fibre-optic and LED technology. We can assist you should you have special requirements for sound distribution in your home. You may require a home-theatre with surround sound, or even Hi-Fi quality sound transmission throughout your new home. Whole house control systems can coordinate your lighting, sound, services and appliances.

We work with experienced consultants but can also provide our own input with your Kitchen Design requirements. We will help you to create the ‘look’ you’re after, whether traditional or contemporary. Modern homes seldom have enough storage space, primarily because wasted space in a home is costly and therefore undesirable. We can assist you with the latest design concepts to provide optimal space utilization and subsequently more useful storage space. Your new home can be planned to accommodate all your storage requirements without compromise to style and comfort.
